No, I have not at all listened to any of Jay-Z's new album (but I do like the cover design + title). Frankly, I'm not a huge fan of his, & when I saw someone post a link to this music video I was seriously expecting something pretty dumb (like Kanye's video for BLKKK SKKKN HEAD). Instead, what I discovered was something that put a genuine smile on my face. :))))
Seriously, watch all of it, it's so worth it. I really really appreciate when people challenge or rub up against this weird ideology of the 'high art world' (whatever the hell that is). Sure, Jay has put himself in a pretty controlled situation, with many well-known faces (Alan Cumming, Taraji P. Henson, Marina Abramovic, etc.), but still, this is fun/beautiful, you must admit.
Especially since I was recently told that rap music is not music at all, and thus, not an art. (small minded people live in very small worlds)
Watch for the interesting interactions between performer & audience (who participate in the loveliest ways). Watch because he references Basquiat, Warhol, Picasso (duh), and other contemporary artists. Watch because you love Jay-Z, dammit. Or, like me, watch because it makes you happy.
Or, you know, don't.
Love you all, bye!
